Mr. Hugh Salmon is the Director of the Global Social Service Workforce Alliance. He has 20 years of international experience in social service workforce strengthening, as a trainer, consultant, consultancy project coordinator and program director. In doing so he has directed or advised projects to map, assess, develop and strengthen the social service workforce in a wide range of low- and middle-income countries. As GSSWA Director he leads projects at global, regional and national level, focussed on social service workforce mapping, assessment, strengthening and financing, and exploring the role of the workforce in a range of policy and practice contexts, including in social protection, in the health sector including mental health, and in schools. Since 2000, Hugh has been training and advising social workers, their managers and government policy makers, in Eastern Europe and in Central Asia. He has more recently worked across a range of countries in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. From 2012 to 2018, he was a member of the leadership team that established Family for Every Child as a new global alliance of local civil society organizations, committed to reforming and improving family and community-based alternative care services for children who have lost the care of their own family. Hugh has also worked as a consultant helping develop family-based alternative care services in several countries. He has master’s degrees in Social Work from Goldsmiths College University of London and in Civil Society Management from London South Bank University. He lives in Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia.
