Department of social work at the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences

The university of social welfare and rehabilitation sciences started its activities in 1993 with the establishment of a social work department and gradually expanded until now, with 22 departments and eight research centers, as well as benefiting from the scientific potential of more than 150 faculty members in education. The university has about 1,800 students, 65% of whom are graduate students.

One of the unique features of this university is that it has all the fields of rehabilitation including medical rehabilitation, social rehabilitation, vocational rehabilitation and educational rehabilitation; Razi Psychiatric Hospital (the largest psychiatric hospital in the West Asia), and Rofaydeh Rehabilitation Hospital are two inpatient centers that provide services under supervision of USWRs. Asma Rehabilitation Center and Nezam Mafi Rehabilitation Clinic are two outpatient centers that provide rehabilitation services. The clients of these hospitals and rehabilitation centers are from all over the country.

In addition to the specialized hospitals and two medical rehabilitation centers, the department of social work has access to more than 40 fields for students internship. So, social work students have the opportunity for experience various internship fields.

The social work in Iran has 60 years’ history and was founded by Sattareh Farmanfarmaian. After the establishment of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences in 1991 and due to the increase in social issues and the need for specialists in this field, the program of social work education was approved by the High Council for Medical Science Planningin 1993. Four year later, in 1997, the masters degree in this field was approved and USWRs. Finally, according to the countrys need at the macro level and the role of social workers in policy making and leadership, education, and counseling in the field of social issues and the urgent need for a doctorate in social work, the doctoral program of social work was prepared and approved in 2003.

Iranian Scientific Association of Social Work

Iranian Scientific Association of Social Work has been licensed by the Scientific Associations Commission of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education since 2002. This association works only in the scientific, research, professional and technical fields related to social work, and its members have no political activity or affiliation with political parties and factions. At present, Dr. Mostafa Eghlima is the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association. The association is headquartered in Tehran and has branches in other cities. 

The ISASW try to improve the knowledge of social workers in Iran by holding national conferences and workshops on social work.  In addition, the publication of books, social work standards and Quarterly Journal of Social Work have been the three main activities of ISASW. The Quarterly Journal of Social Work has been published since 1995 in hardcopy form and since 2014 is available online. It is the first social work journal in Iran with a scientific-research rank. It is possible to send an article to the Quarterly Journal of Social Work through the website (www.SocialWorkMag.ir). The Quarterly Journal of Social Work is indexed in Magiran, Google Scholar, Iran Medex and ISC.
